Tidepooling

Tidepooling

An amazing array of invertebrates live within Halibut Cove's intertidal zone.

Low tide is prime time for tidepooling, when the receding water exposes creatures such as sea stars, sea cucumbers, psychedelic  nudibranchs, anemones, chitons, decorator crabs, urchins, mussels, other shellfish and maybe even an elusive octopus. The lower the tide, the more you'll see!

Take a tour with one of our guides to learn about the creatures of the intertidal zone. Observe frilled plumose anemones with their impressive angel-hair tentacles fully expanded, resembling fancy palm trees dancing in the current. Handy sealife identification charts and rubber boots are provided.

The tidal swings in Kachemak Bay are some of the largest in the world. The average vertical difference between high and low tide is around 15 feet, with an average high tide of around 18 feet. Tides can be as high as 28 feet in Kachemak Bay and during the corresponding low tide, the water in Halibut Cove around Stillpoint Lodge is only a few feet deep.

The extreme tidal action and pristine waters of Halibut Cove make for exceptional creature habitat. Ask our reservations team about the best time to book for tidepooling, and explore and learn with our guides.

"Epic Alaska Vacation Stillpoint Lodge Halibut Cove

"Stillpoint Lodge took the experience to epic. Stillpoint arranged for us to be picked up by seaplane Sunday morning and flown directly to Stillpoint Lodge in Halibut Cove to begin our six days of luxury excursions.

"Stillpoint was much more than a home base for our excursions. It was a diverse loving family that made us feel welcome and almost Alaskan."
