History of Halibut Cove

Discover our little ecological niche- the perfect balance of history, art, music and environmental stewardship- Halibut Cove truly is Alaskan coastal living at its finest.

From 1911 to 1928, Scandinavian fishermen followed a rich herring run to Halibut Cove. The fishery employed as many as 1,000 people during the height of the season. By 1928 the herring were gone due to poor management of the waste from the processing facilities, called salteries. Halibut Cove soon became a ghost town of old-timers.

In 1948, Clem Tillion came to Halibut Cove. In 1952, he married Diana Rutzebeck, and together they pioneered the community into a fishing and arts mecca. Diana’s Cove Gallery, featuring her work done primarily in octopus ink, opened in 1968.

Today, fine art has become a major industry in this community along with fishing, sustainable shellfish farming and tourism.

"Epic Alaska Vacation Stillpoint Lodge Halibut Cove

"Stillpoint Lodge took the experience to epic. Stillpoint arranged for us to be picked up by seaplane Sunday morning and flown directly to Stillpoint Lodge in Halibut Cove to begin our six days of luxury excursions.

"Stillpoint was much more than a home base for our excursions. It was a diverse loving family that made us feel welcome and almost Alaskan."
